Classics 1: Electrifying Colors

Eckart Preu, conductor
Pascal Roge, piano
Maurice Ravel, Bolero
George Gershwin, Piano Concerto in F
Nikolai Rimski-Korsakov, Sheherazade
What better way to start out a season than with the rhythms and colors of Ravel's Bolero! One of the greatest pieces of French music, the huge slow and steady orchestral crescendo will quicken your pulse more effectively than any other piece of music. George Gershwin's genius was that he succeeded in both classical and jazz. With his gift for melody and a natural feeling for dramatic pacing, he melded the form of an instrumental concerto as established by Mozart and Beethoven with a Charleston rhythm, or a blues melody. Rimski-Korsakov's oriental fantasy Sheherazade is a miracle of orchestration. Inspired by The Arabian Nights, it is a feast of sumptuous colors and brilliant instrumental effects.
